Hello, nature enthusiasts!

Today, we’re traveling to the mesmerizing Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Known for its deep blue waters and dramatic scenery, Crater Lake is a true gem among our national parks. Let’s explore the wonders of this awe-inspiring destination and discover what makes it so special.

A Natural Wonder

At the heart of Crater Lake National Park is the stunning Crater Lake itself, formed over 7,700 years ago by the collapse of a volcano. This caldera lake is the deepest in the United States and one of the clearest in the world, with water so blue it has to be seen to be believed.

Iconic Sights and Activities

Crater Lake National Park offers a variety of activities and sights to make your visit truly unforgettable:

  • Rim Drive: This 33-mile scenic drive circles the lake, offering numerous overlooks with panoramic views that are absolutely breathtaking. It’s a must-do for any visitor.
  • Cleetwood Cove Trail: This steep trail is the only access to the lake’s shore. Here, you can take a dip in the chilly, clear waters of Crater Lake or embark on a boat tour to explore Wizard Island and other features up close.
  • Wizard Island: A volcanic cinder cone that rises from the lake’s surface, Wizard Island offers hiking trails and fantastic views. Boat tours are available for a closer look.

Family-Friendly Hikes

Crater Lake National Park features several trails that are great for families:

  • Discovery Point Trail: An easy 2.2-mile round trip hike that follows the rim of the lake, offering spectacular views and minimal elevation change.
  • Sun Notch Trail: A short but rewarding 0.5-mile loop that provides stunning views of the lake and Phantom Ship, a small island that resembles a ghostly ship sailing the lake.
  • Garfield Peak Trail: A moderately strenuous 3.4-mile round trip hike that offers incredible views of the lake and surrounding landscape.

A Family Memory to Treasure

One of our family’s favorite memories at Crater Lake was attempting to take a selfie with the wind blowing us around. It was a hilarious and challenging moment that we’ll never forget! We were also delighted to discover that the water really is as blue as the pictures make it look—a vibrant, almost surreal shade of blue that left us in awe.

Tips for Visiting Crater Lake National Park

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your visit to Crater Lake:

  • Check Seasonal Access: The park is open year-round, but some areas and roads, including Rim Drive, are closed in winter due to snow. Always check current conditions before your visit.
  • Dress in Layers: The weather can be unpredictable, with temperatures varying greatly between day and night. Be prepared for cool conditions, even in summer.
  • Bring Plenty of Water and Snacks: We were glad to have sandwich supplies in the car with us, as we waited quite a long time to get into the park. There were long lines at the entrance. We were able to make sandwiches and enjoy lunch in the car, so we were ready to explore when it was our turn.
  • Expect Long Lines and Tight Parking: Parking can be very difficult to find, and lines can be long, especially during peak seasons. Pack your patience and plan to arrive early.
  • Respect the Environment: Stay on designated trails and leave no trace to help preserve the park’s natural beauty.
