While many people choose to skip this park when they visit Utah, I believe it is not to be missed. Let’s explore the enchanting beauty and hidden treasures this park has to offer.

A Park Rich in History and Natural Beauty

Capitol Reef National Park is famous for its striking Waterpocket Fold, a geologic monocline that extends nearly 100 miles. The park also boasts historic orchards, pioneer history, and stunning vistas. Whether you’re driving through or hitting the trails, there’s something here for everyone.

Iconic Sights and Activities

Capitol Reef offers a unique blend of natural wonders and historic charm. Here are some highlights you won’t want to miss:

• Fruita Orchards and Gifford Homestead: One of the most delightful parts of Capitol Reef is the historic Fruita area. The Gifford Homestead offers delicious homemade pies, jams, and other treats. Be sure to arrive early because the pies sell out quickly! Stop by to enjoy a slice of pie and experience a taste of pioneer life.
• Scenic Drive: The Scenic Drive through Capitol Reef is a must-do. This 8-mile paved road takes you through stunning landscapes, with plenty of pull-offs and viewpoints along the way. You’ll find impressive rock formations, canyon views, and historical sites—all easily accessible from the road.
• Capitol Gorge and Grand Wash: These two scenic dirt roads provide access to beautiful slot canyons and dramatic landscapes. Perfect for those who prefer to explore by car.

Family-Friendly Stops and Short Hikes

While Capitol Reef offers extensive hiking opportunities, there are also plenty of easy stops and short trails suitable for families:

• Petroglyph Panel: A short boardwalk trail that takes you to ancient petroglyphs carved by the Fremont people. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the past.
• Hickman Bridge Trail: This 2-mile round trip hike leads to a stunning natural bridge and offers fantastic views of the surrounding area.
• Goosenecks Overlook: A quick stop with a short walk to a viewpoint that offers breathtaking views of Sulphur Creek canyon.

A Family Memory to Treasure

We have fond and challenging memories of our attempts to reach Capitol Reef National Park in March 2021. Visiting Utah’s “Mighty 5,” we were greeted by unexpected snowfalls on several mornings, making the journey to Capitol Reef difficult. After two attempts, we finally made it, only to find much of the park closed due to snow. Despite the closures, we were absolutely in awe of the beauty of the parts we did experience. We can’t wait to go back and explore more of this incredible park.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your visit to Capitol Reef:

• Check Road Conditions: The scenic drive and many park roads can be affected by weather, especially during the colder months. Always check current conditions before heading out.
• Dress in Layers: Weather in Capitol Reef can change quickly, especially in spring and fall. Be prepared with appropriate clothing.
• Enjoy the Orchards: During the harvest season, visitors are welcome to pick fruit from the park’s historic orchards. It’s a delightful way to connect with the park’s history.
• Plan for Limited Services: Capitol Reef is more remote compared to some other national parks. Make sure to bring sufficient water, snacks, and supplies.
