Today, we’re journeying to the remarkable Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. Known for its towering sand dunes—the tallest in North America—this park offers a unique blend of adventure and natural beauty. A Landscape Unlike Any Other

Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to an expansive sand dune field surrounded by diverse landscapes, including grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes, and tundra. The contrast between the golden dunes and the lush mountains creates a breathtaking scene that feels almost surreal.

Iconic Sights and Activities

Whether you’re embarking on a thrilling adventure or looking for a quiet place to reflect, Great Sand Dunes offers something for everyone:

• The Main Dune Field: The most accessible area of the park, where visitors of all ages can climb the dunes and enjoy sand sledding or sandboarding. It’s an exhilarating experience, perfect for both thrill-seekers and families.
• Medano Creek: Flowing seasonally at the base of the dunes, the creek offers a refreshing spot to play and cool off. It’s a hit with kids and a unique natural waterpark.
• High Dune: For a more challenging adventure, hike to High Dune, which offers stunning panoramic views of the vast dune field and surrounding mountains.
• Star Dune: The tallest dune in North America, which stands at 750 feet. It’s a more strenuous hike, but reaching the summit is a rewarding accomplishment.

Exploring Beyond the Dunes

While the dunes are the park’s main attraction, there’s much more to explore:

• Medano Pass Primitive Road: Accessing the more remote areas of the park requires a 4WD vehicle. This road offers a rugged adventure through dunes, forests, and creeks, leading to excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
• Montville Nature Trail: A short, easy trail that provides a change of scenery with forested areas and beautiful views of the dunes and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Future Adventures Await

Our visit to Great Sand Dunes National Park was a spontaneous addition to an epic cross-country RV trip. While we didn’t have a chance to create a family memory during this short visit, it left us eager to return. We dream of coming back with a 4WD vehicle to access more remote parts of the park, explore the diverse landscapes, and search for wildlife that call this incredible place home.

• Check Creek Conditions: If you plan to visit Medano Creek, check the current conditions, as the flow varies seasonally and annually.
• Bring Sunglasses and Sand Protection: The bright, reflective sand can be harsh on the eyes, and the wind can kick up sand easily. Sunglasses and a bandana or scarf can help protect you.
• Stay Hydrated: The high elevation and sandy terrain can be physically demanding. Bring plenty of water, especially when hiking the dunes.
• Respect the Environment: Stay on designated trails when exploring beyond the dunes, and follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the park’s natural beauty.
