The magic didn’t stop when we reached the end of Route 66; our epic journey continued with even more adventures awaiting us! From a scenic detour through Las Vegas to the breathtaking landscapes of Utah’s Mighty 5, our road trip was a whirlwind of unforgettable moments and natural wonders. Let’s dive into the next chapter of our adventure!

From the End of Route 66 to Las Vegas and Beyond

After the nostalgic charm of Route 66, we made a scenic drive through the iconic Las Vegas Strip—just to soak in the vibrant lights and energy—before continuing our journey to the serene and awe-inspiring beauty of Utah’s national parks, known as the Mighty 5.

Utah’s Mighty 5 and Beyond

Camping Near Zion National Park

We began our Utah adventure with a stay near Zion National Park, using this area as our home base for visiting Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Capitol Reef National Parks. The towering sandstone cliffs and lush landscapes of Zion took our breath away. We had one memorable night inside Zion itself. The quieter nighttime setting revealed a starlit sky that was truly mesmerizing.

Driving Through the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel

The next day, we had the unique experience of driving our motorhome through the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel with an escort as we made our way to Moab. Navigating this historic tunnel in our RV was a thrilling adventure in itself!

Exploring Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef

While staying near Zion, we also made trips to Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks. Despite encountering unexpected challenges like snowfall, we marveled at the stunning scenery. The snow added a picturesque layer, transforming these parks into a winter wonderland that provided a new perspective and appreciation for nature’s beauty.

Camping in Moab – Arches and Canyonlands National Parks

Our RV found a home for several nights in Moab, giving us time to explore both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. The awe-inspiring arches, dramatic mesas, and canyons were like stepping into another world. We hiked, explored, and soaked in the vibrant red rock landscapes that make these parks so iconic.

Extra Stops Along the Way: Colorado’s Natural Wonders

As we journeyed home, we squeezed in visits to additional National Parks and monuments, enriching our road trip experience.

Mesa Verde National Park

Stepping back in time, we explored the ancient cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde. These well-preserved ruins gave us a deep appreciation for the history and ingenuity of the Ancestral Pueblo people.

Colorado National Monument

The rugged beauty of Colorado National Monument, with its towering rock formations and panoramic vistas, was a sight to behold. One of the highlights was seeing baby big horn sheep grazing with their mothers—an incredible encounter with nature. The scenic drives and overlooks provided countless photo opportunities.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Our final stop was Great Sand Dunes National Park, home to the tallest sand dunes in North America. The vast expanse of dunes against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains was a remarkable contrast and a fitting end to our epic journey.
