Hello, travel enthusiasts! 🌍✨

Next up on our epic road trip adventure: the distinctive beauty and exciting attractions of the Dakotas! From the rugged charm of Badlands National Park to the historical allure of Mount Rushmore, and the wild wonders of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, our trip through the Dakotas was a blend of scenic drives, iconic landmarks, and unforgettable moments.

Camping Outside Badlands National Park

Our adventure began by camping just outside Badlands National Park in South Dakota. The dramatic landscapes, sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires provided a backdrop straight out of a nature documentary. We spent our days hiking through these breathtaking geologic formations and marveling at the park’s stunning beauty.

Visit to Wall Drug

While at Badlands, we took a fun detour to the legendary Wall Drug. This quirky roadside attraction is famous for its free ice water and an eclectic mix of shops and eateries. We enjoyed a free cup of cool water, did some unique shopping, and soaked in the nostalgic charm of this iconic spot.

A Night Near Mount Rushmore

Next, we spent a night near Mount Rushmore, the iconic monument featuring the sculpted faces of four American presidents. The evening lighting ceremony was captivating, and standing in the presence of such a monumental work of art and history was truly awe-inspiring. We capped off our visit with some delicious ice cream made from Thomas Jefferson’s original recipe, making the experience even sweeter.

Exploring Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Our journey then took us to Medora, North Dakota, where we ventured into Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Named after the conservationist president, this park hosted expansive badlands, rich wildlife, and colorful sunsets. Bison roamed freely, and prairie dog towns bubbled with activity. While in Medora, we also attended the famous Medora Musical, an entertaining outdoor show that celebrates the spirit of the Old West.

A Detour Into Montana

We made a delightful little detour into Montana, soaking in the vast, open landscapes before heading back to camp in Custer State Park in South Dakota. This stretch of our travels allowed us to appreciate the serene beauty and diverse wildlife that make this region so special.

Camping in Custer State Park

Back in South Dakota, we camped at Custer State Park, a place renowned for its abundant wildlife and scenic views. We enjoyed hiking through picturesque trails, encountering bison, pronghorn antelope, elk, and burros along the way. The park’s wildlife loop offered thrilling opportunities to see these animals up close, making it a highlight of our journey.

Every moment of our road trip through the Dakotas was filled with discovery, wonder, and joy. The beautiful scenery, diverse landscapes, and unique experiences created unforgettable family memories.
