Hello, leaf peepers! 🍁✨
Today, we’re sharing our spectacular fall camping adventure in the picturesque Northeast. From the historical streets of Boston to the unexpected but delightful detour to the vibrant heart of New York City, our journey was filled with historical landmarks, stunning fall foliage, and unforgettable city experiences. Let’s take a closer look!
Boston – History and Coastal Beauty
We kicked off our adventure in Boston, a city steeped in history and charm.
Walking the Freedom Trail
We embraced our inner history buffs by walking the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile route that took us to 16 historically significant sites, including the Boston Common, Paul Revere’s House, and the Old North Church. It was a captivating journey through America’s past.
Visiting Lexington and Concord
Continuing our historical exploration, we visited Lexington and Concord, the sites of the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. The rich history and beautiful landscapes made these stops truly memorable.
Exploring the Shores of Cape Cod
We wound down our Boston stay with a relaxing trip to the shores of Cape Cod. The crisp fall air and scenic coastal views were the perfect complement to our historical adventures. We enjoyed seeing seals play in the water and surfers riding the waves. We noticed lots of signs warning about Great White Sharks, which piqued our curiosity. Did you know the largest concentration of Great Whites in the world is off that coast? We even talked to a surfer who had seen one about 12 feet long that very day!
A Change of Plans – New York City!
Our original plan was to head up into New Hampshire and Vermont, but fate had other plans. As we were traveling to Boston, our kids spotted the New York City skyline in the distance. Excitedly, they kept asking to go, and we couldn’t resist the allure of the Big Apple. We quickly found a campsite in Jersey City, just across the bay from Lady Liberty. From our campsite, we had an incredible view of the iconic Statue of Liberty herself!
New York City Sights and Sounds
Our spontaneous New York adventure was packed with incredible experiences and a visit with one of my childhood friends. From delicious food to shopping to sight seeing, the Big Apple did not disappoint.
Visiting the 9-11 Memorial
We paid our respects at the 9-11 Memorial, a deeply moving and reflective visit that left a lasting impression on us all. Jeff and I shared stories with our boys about where we were when those tragic events took place. We also talked to them about how our country came together in a beautiful way in the days that followed.
Strolling Through Central Park
We strolled through the vibrant colors of Central Park, relishing the contrast of natural beauty amidst the bustling city. We spotted a pickleball tournament being played in the park, and we found the bridge where the snowball fight took place in Elf.
Enjoying New York Pizza and Times Square
No trip to New York is complete without indulging in some authentic New York pizza. We chose a spot that used to be a church. Of course we had to head over to Junior’s for some cheesecake as well. We also took in the dazzling sights and sounds of Times Square, a sensory overload that our kids absolutely loved.
